Paintings for Toronto Outdoor Art Fair 2025!

Updated: Jun 28

I’ve been invited by Tangled Arts + Disability Gallery to provide artworks for their booth at Toronto Outdoor Art Fair (TOAF) 2025. I prepared 2 original watercolour works on paper: one large (18X24) and one small (9X12). Both are expressive variations on the same theme, titled “Fracticality or Worlds in Green, Red, Blue”.

Each of the two paintings is a triptych of three panels in green, red and blue - resembling a stained glass window. The suggestion of stained glass is a deliberate homage to my sister, as are the words associated with each of the panels in the smaller work, signalling relationship (green), groundedness (red) and being in movement (blue). The fact that each panel may be considered a standalone painting within a painting, is a further meditation on the nature of form and dimension.

The forms depicted in each panel of the larger work, may be interpreted as fractal, self similar, and repeated on different scales to infinity. I’ve used the word fractal to signal the variance between how much space objects like trees, mountains, flowers, and water take up - where values fall between one and two, two and three and more. I’ve played with that in providing both a triptych in two sizes, and a set of separate panels as stand-alone prints.

The design and colour of each panel within the larger painting, is derived from a piece of music that gives me colour, form, and words, as always. I chose music that gave me a feeling of immersion in a particular colour that I find healing, and that I associate with nature. Here are the details of colour, form, words and music - reading each panel in both paintings from left to right:

Green Color Panel: Trees sing of growing and creating through all of Nature.

Words associated with this theme inscribed on the 9X12:“Blessed are we in Collectivity”.

Music associated with Green Panel: Prokofiev, Ballad Op. 15 in C Minor for cello and piano preformed by Hermine Horiot and Mathilde Nguyen

Play the music at this YouTube Link (a QR code will be provided with the works at the booth):

Red Colour Panel: Earth sings of strength, of breaking ground, by flowers and mountains.

Words associated with this theme inscribed on the 9X12:“Trust in our shared Eternity”.

Music associated with Red Panel: Beethoven, Overture to The Ruins of Athens, Op. 113 performed by The Chicago Symphony, conductor Riccardo Muti

Play the music at this YouTube Link (a QR code will be provided with the works at the booth):

Blue Colour Panel: Water sings of energy in a vortex of movement and infinity.

Words associated with this theme inscribed on the 9X12:”There is no me, outside of thee.”

Music: Zelenka, S’una sol lagrima, aria sung by Jakub Jozef  Orlinski, countertenor

My original paintings, plus a giclee print along with a limited edition print of three stand alone panels, plus a set of bookmarks derived from the smaller work, will be available for sale at the Tangled Arts + Disability Gallery booth from July 11-13. Hope to see you there!
